Brief summary
Reproduced verbatim from the official ClinicalTrials.gov record. Not medical advice.
There is emerging evidence that the order in which food is consumed in a meal, known as the "nutrient sequence", can have protective health effects against obesity and metabolic disease. These studies show that consuming food sources rich in protein before consuming carbohydrates will significantly lower blood glucose levels equivalent to many glucose-lowering medications. This nutrition intervention can have tremendous therapeutic potential in individuals who are pre-diabetic and prevent the onset of obesity. Surprisingly, however, there are no studies to date that have comprehensively tested this efficacy in young health adults. This research proposal will define the response of nutrient sequencing in young healthy individuals to determine if this intervention can improve metabolic profiles such as normalizing blood glucose levels to healthy parameters in order to prevent obesity and type 2 diabetes. We will 1) test if the metabolic benefits of Nutrient Sequencing can extend across different populations in NY state, and 2) define the mechanism of the metabolic response to nutrient sequencing interventions by capturing participant circulating blood proteome and metabolome.
